Chapter 14

Freya took off at a brisk pace. Diana and Tyr matched her strides, but Freya kept pulling ahead. Finally Diana called, "What's the big hurry?"

"The sooner you protect the webs, the sooner we can move on. The spinners gave us twenty-four hours." Freya tugged at her necklace. "How far is it to the border? I thought we'd be there by now."

Diana came to a halt. "You realize I can only magick the webs that are strung now. That's all I can do until Leshy and Arakhne change forms tonight."

Freya's entire body slumped. "I'm ahead of myself, aren't I?"

Diana went to her and wrapped her in a tight embrace. "I want to protect mortals, too, but I'm doing all I can."

"I know." Freya pinched her lips in a tight line. "But an entire town, maybe a city—what if we can't deflect their magic in time?"

Tyr's fingers curled into a fist. "Then people will die, and when we find the spinners, they'll wish they were dead."

It took another half hour to reach the edge of Leshy’s forest. He was lord of more property than any of them expected. Once there, Diana wasn’t surprised to see another third of his trees covered with webs.

It took only minutes for Diana to bespell them. While she worked, Tyr studied the Ironwood border across the stream from them.

“Since we're here, why not protect as much of the frost giants’ border as you can?” Tyr said. “We’ll walk with you while you work.”

Diana looked across the raging river. “We don't have enough time or potions to protect the entire border, but I'll protect as much of it as I can before it gets dark.” She parted the water so they could cross the river. They walked along the border at a brisk pace. By late afternoon, they’d covered a long section of the dense, twisted trunks, but there was a lot more to go. “Let’s try something else.” Diana touched her runes and said end of forest. In a whoosh of energy, they found themselves standing on the shore of a cold, restless sea.

Freya hugged herself to keep warm. “How far did we travel?”

“Not far. It didn’t take long.” Wind whipped Diana's words away, and Tyr came to stand beside her to form a buffer. She bent to sprinkle herbs and potions at the border's corner to give her a base. “I think I can connect my magic from this spot to the place we stopped before.” Diana chanted and waited. Soon, magic buzzed along an invisible line, and the protection spell was in place.

Diana sighed. “This took too long. All we’ve made safe is the border from here to Leshy’s forest.”

"That might be enough," Tyr said. "If you could magick the land that borders the sea…."

“Do you want to walk that shoreline?” Diana snapped. She couldn’t keep the edge out of her voice. Her feet hurt from walking on sharp stones in sandals. Her arms hurt from raising them for too many chants. First, she’d been hot.
